  42.            INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION

  46.            By now you should have successfully installed the complete Power
  47.            package.  If you haven't, there are two ways you can do this: use
  48.            the included install program, or just copy the files over to a
  49.            new directory.  Using the install program takes the work from
  50.            your hands and does it all automatically, without touching your
  51.            AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files.  Use the INSTALL.DOC file as a
  52.            guide to using the install program; or just run the install
  53.            program without it, it's straight-forward.

  55.            Power is an engineering application designed for (but not limited
  56.            to) a group of Electronics Engineers whose tasks involve IC cir-
  57.            cuit designs.  The two-fold primary directive is: calculate from
  58.            one or two input files the required current for a set of chips in
  59.            a circuit design, and provide a means of information sharing be-
  60.

  67.            tween engineers so that there is no redundant data entry while
  68.            allowing each engineer to have his/her own personal DataBase to
  69.            work from.

  71.            Power allows engineers to arrive at the calculated power
  72.            (current) required to run his IC chips in his circuit design.  No
  73.            need to put them together and then measure the current.  The en-
  74.            gineer can then design to the calculated value instead of the
  75.            worst case value.  He can also use this value to make a buying
  76.            decision for a suitable power supply.

  78.            Power keeps a database of all IC chips with their respective
  79.            electrical parameters necessary for the calculation of the re-
  80.            quired power.

  82.            Power has a fully windowized, text-graphics, user-friendly inter-
  83.            face.  The Data Entry interface has features that reduce
  84.            repetitious typing of similar part numbers of the same manufac-
  85.            turer.  The Viewer/Editor function allows point-and-shoot editing
  86.            while also viewing the data in one window.  The DataBase Editor
  87.            has a user-configurable password protection as a deterrent
  88.            against unauthorized editorial changes in the DataBase.  The Con-
  89.            figuration Menu allows users to configure for exploding-window
  90.            sound, error bell sound, background color toggle, DataBase Editor
  91.            password toggle, and others.

  93.            The only limit to the size of the DataBase is the available
  94.            memory and disk space.

  99.            There are no surprises.  The shareware version of Power is a
  100.            fully functional application, is not crippled in any way, and
  101.            will continue to run even after the 30-day trial period.

  104.            INCLUDED THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE

  106.            The program LIST.COM (small version) is included in the archive
  107.            as a third-party software.  This is shareware written and
  108.            copyrighted by Vernon Buerg.

  117.            PROGRAM OPERATION

  119.            There are two command-line options available:

  121.                      /m  -  Force monochrome color
  122.                      /c  -  Turn on snow-checking, for CGA adaptors

  130.            Use the /m option if you are running Power on a lap-top that has
  131.            either a plasma or LCD screen, if any color is missing.

  133.            Use the /c option to prevent "snow" on the screen, if you see it

  136.            Otherwise, to run Power, at the DOS prompt, type --

  141.            If under DOS 3 or later, Power may be run from any directory,
  142.            either by including the directory in your DOS PATH statement, or
  143.            by including the drive and directory name in front of the PWR

  157.            Power is not a WinApp.  It will run under Microsoft Windows 3.x
  158.            as a DOS task.  For best results, run it only in a full-screen
  159.            display mode (adjustable in the PIF editor).  It will run suc-
  160.            cessfully in full-screen display mode without a PIF file.

  163.            INSTALLATION FILES

  165.            See file PACKING.LST for a description and purpose of each in-
  166.            stallation file.

  171.            The file BRIEFING.DOC is a briefing describing minimum require-
  172.            ments for a quick-start of Power.

  174.            The file PWRDEMO.DOC is a user-guided demonstration of Power's
  175.            capabilities and features.

  177.            The documentation is the file PWR.DOC.  If you wish to print this
  178.            file or any DOC file, for best results, choose a font that con-
  179.            tains the line draw composite characters (characters that draws
  180.            boxes).  If you have an HP LaserJet printer, use the internal,
  181.            standard PC-8 Courier font.

  183.            New features in recent versions of Power are documented in the
  184.            HISTORY.DOC file, which may be printed from DOS with the PRINT
  185.            command.

  193.            EVALUATING THE PROGRAM AND ORDERING A REGISTERED COPY

  195.            You may try Power for a 30-day period on an evaluation basis at
  196.            no charge.

  198.            If you continue to use the program after the evaluation period,
  199.            please pay the registration fee (indicated in the file
  200.            REGISTER.DOC) plus shipping and applicable sales tax (Maryland
  201.            only).  For ordering information, refer to the file REGISTER.DOC.
  202.            You can print the Registration Form from within Power at any time
  203.            by entering the number 12 and pressing <Enter> at the Main Menu.

  205.            To order by mail, invoke Main Menu item 12 (Register), fill out
  206.            the Registration Form by keyboard, make your choice of method of
  207.            payment, and mail it with your payment to the address shown on
  208.            it.

  211.            Form so that you can give the operator the Sales Code indicated
  212.            on the print-out.  Specify either 3.5" or 5.25" diskettes, and

  245.            IMPLEMENTATION

  247.            Power is written almost entirely in Turbo Pascal with some as-
  248.            sembly routines linked in.  It was tested on a 386/25 machine un-
  249.            der MS-DOS 5.00.  Source code is not available.

  259.            I have purposely avoided using third-party source code in my
  260.            program.  Everything written is an original, with the exception
  261.            of one object code supplied by Borland International, Inc., to
  262.            those who purchased their Turbo Pascal 5.5 and 6.0 compilers.

  267.            The program LIST.COM (small version) is included in the archive
  268.            as a third-party software.  This is shareware written and

  274.            You may use this software to view my documentation as part of
  275.            your evaluation of Power (as well as that of LIST); that's why it

  280.            The LIST PLUS program (and the regular LIST shareware program)
  281.            has many, many features not included in the small version.  This
  282.            is one of the most popular and well-known program in distribution
  283.            today, so much so that it may be available at your nearest BBS.
  284.            Even Borland International has licensed its use and distribution
  285.            as README.COM to read the README.TXT file, included with
  286.            Borland's software package.

  288.            If you want to evaluate LIST, it is strongly suggested that you
  289.            obtain a regular shareware version (not the small version) for
  290.            evaluation.  The program is probably available at a local BBS in
  291.            your area.  It is also available via CompuServe (GO IBMSYS).
