- INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Hello!
-
- By now you should have successfully installed the complete Power
- package. If you haven't, there are two ways you can do this: use
- the included install program, or just copy the files over to a
- new directory. Using the install program takes the work from
- your hands and does it all automatically, without touching your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files. Use the INSTALL.DOC file as a
- guide to using the install program; or just run the install
- program without it, it's straight-forward.
-
- Power is an engineering application designed for (but not limited
- to) a group of Electronics Engineers whose tasks involve IC cir-
- cuit designs. The two-fold primary directive is: calculate from
- one or two input files the required current for a set of chips in
- a circuit design, and provide a means of information sharing be-
-
-
-
- 1
-
-
-
- tween engineers so that there is no redundant data entry while
- allowing each engineer to have his/her own personal DataBase to
- work from.
-
- Power allows engineers to arrive at the calculated power
- (current) required to run his IC chips in his circuit design. No
- need to put them together and then measure the current. The en-
- gineer can then design to the calculated value instead of the
- worst case value. He can also use this value to make a buying
- decision for a suitable power supply.
-
- Power keeps a database of all IC chips with their respective
- electrical parameters necessary for the calculation of the re-
- quired power.
-
- Power has a fully windowized, text-graphics, user-friendly inter-
- face. The Data Entry interface has features that reduce
- repetitious typing of similar part numbers of the same manufac-
- turer. The Viewer/Editor function allows point-and-shoot editing
- while also viewing the data in one window. The DataBase Editor
- has a user-configurable password protection as a deterrent
- against unauthorized editorial changes in the DataBase. The Con-
- figuration Menu allows users to configure for exploding-window
- sound, error bell sound, background color toggle, DataBase Editor
- password toggle, and others.
-
- The only limit to the size of the DataBase is the available
- memory and disk space.
-
-
- NO SURPRISES
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~
- There are no surprises. The shareware version of Power is a
- fully functional application, is not crippled in any way, and
- will continue to run even after the 30-day trial period.
-
-
- INCLUDED THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The program LIST.COM (small version) is included in the archive
- as a third-party software. This is shareware written and
- copyrighted by Vernon Buerg.
-
- I have his expressed permission to distribute this shareware with
- my package.
-
- For more information, see the heading "The included LIST.COM
- program" below.
-
-
- PROGRAM OPERATION
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- There are two command-line options available:
-
- /m - Force monochrome color
- /c - Turn on snow-checking, for CGA adaptors
-
-
-
- 2
-
-
-
- Use the /m option if you are running Power on a lap-top that has
- either a plasma or LCD screen, if any color is missing.
-
- Use the /c option to prevent "snow" on the screen, if you see it
- on a CGA monitor.
-
- Otherwise, to run Power, at the DOS prompt, type --
-
- PWR
-
-
- If under DOS 3 or later, Power may be run from any directory,
- either by including the directory in your DOS PATH statement, or
- by including the drive and directory name in front of the PWR
- command. For example:
-
- D:\POWER\PWR
- or
- PATH {your other directories ...} ;D:\POWER;
- PWR
-
-
-
-
-
- WINDOWS 3.x USERS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Power is not a WinApp. It will run under Microsoft Windows 3.x
- as a DOS task. For best results, run it only in a full-screen
- display mode (adjustable in the PIF editor). It will run suc-
- cessfully in full-screen display mode without a PIF file.
-
-
- INSTALLATION FILES
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- See file PACKING.LST for a description and purpose of each in-
- stallation file.
-
-
- DOCUMENTATION
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The file BRIEFING.DOC is a briefing describing minimum require-
- ments for a quick-start of Power.
-
- The file PWRDEMO.DOC is a user-guided demonstration of Power's
- capabilities and features.
-
- The documentation is the file PWR.DOC. If you wish to print this
- file or any DOC file, for best results, choose a font that con-
- tains the line draw composite characters (characters that draws
- boxes). If you have an HP LaserJet printer, use the internal,
- standard PC-8 Courier font.
-
- New features in recent versions of Power are documented in the
- HISTORY.DOC file, which may be printed from DOS with the PRINT
- command.

- EVALUATING THE PROGRAM AND ORDERING A REGISTERED COPY
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- You may try Power for a 30-day period on an evaluation basis at
- no charge.
-
- If you continue to use the program after the evaluation period,
- please pay the registration fee (indicated in the file
- REGISTER.DOC) plus shipping and applicable sales tax (Maryland
- only). For ordering information, refer to the file REGISTER.DOC.
- You can print the Registration Form from within Power at any time
- by entering the number 12 and pressing <Enter> at the Main Menu.
-
- To order by mail, invoke Main Menu item 12 (Register), fill out
- the Registration Form by keyboard, make your choice of method of
- payment, and mail it with your payment to the address shown on
- it.
-
- To order by phone, you should still fill out the Registration
- Form so that you can give the operator the Sales Code indicated
- on the print-out. Specify either 3.5" or 5.25" diskettes, and
- spell your branding name for your license (mandatory) in the
- Registration Form.
-
- For site license information and quantity discounts, see file
- SITELICE.DOC.
-
-
- WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU REGISTER
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- When you mail in your Registration Form (the invoice printed from
- the Main Menu item 12), I'll send you a diskette of the latest
- copy of the program (most recent upgrade), a printed copy of the
- User's Manual, and 90-days of mail support, BBS support, and Com-
- puServe Mail support. Registered users will receive notices of
- future upgrades when available at a reduced cost. For FAST!
- registration, see the file REGISTER.DOC for details on how you
- can register by phone and have your software converted to the
- registered version.
-
-
- DISTRIBUTION POLICY
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Power may be distributed under the terms of the LIMITED DISTRIBU-
- TION LICENSE contained in file LICENSE.DOC. BBS SysOps, please
- consult file SYSOP.DOC for my policy on distribution of Power by
- BBS. Disk Vendors and user groups, please consult file
- VENDOR.DOC.
-
- You may not distribute the registered version of Power to anyone
- not covered by your software license.
-
-
- IMPLEMENTATION
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Power is written almost entirely in Turbo Pascal with some as-
- sembly routines linked in. It was tested on a 386/25 machine un-
- der MS-DOS 5.00. Source code is not available.
-
-
- 4
-
-
-
-
- THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- I have purposely avoided using third-party source code in my
- program. Everything written is an original, with the exception
- of one object code supplied by Borland International, Inc., to
- those who purchased their Turbo Pascal 5.5 and 6.0 compilers.
-
-
- The included LIST.COM program
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The program LIST.COM (small version) is included in the archive
- as a third-party software. This is shareware written and
- copyrighted by Vernon Buerg.
-
- I have his expressed permission to distribute this shareware with
- my package.
-
- You may use this software to view my documentation as part of
- your evaluation of Power (as well as that of LIST); that's why it
- was included. For instructions on how to use it, see the file
- GREET.DOC. The LIST documentation is not included in this ar-
- chive.
-
- The LIST PLUS program (and the regular LIST shareware program)
- has many, many features not included in the small version. This
- is one of the most popular and well-known program in distribution
- today, so much so that it may be available at your nearest BBS.
- Even Borland International has licensed its use and distribution
- as README.COM to read the README.TXT file, included with
- Borland's software package.
-
- If you want to evaluate LIST, it is strongly suggested that you
- obtain a regular shareware version (not the small version) for
- evaluation. The program is probably available at a local BBS in
- your area. It is also available via CompuServe (GO IBMSYS).

- Buerg. Canadian and non-U.S. checks require excessive
- bank charges.
-
- For use by corporations and other institutions, please
- contact me for a licensing arrangement. More informa-
- tion is supplied in the file LICENSE [not included in
- the Power package]. Customizing and other special
- licensing are available upon request. Purchase orders
- and invoicing are acceptable.
